Zero-emission zones in Amsterdam

Written by: Kendra

What you need to know and how to make it easier

Since Jan. 1, 2025, Amsterdam has had a zero-emission zone to improve air quality. For business owners and logistics service providers, this means additional challenges: routes must be re-planned, not all vehicles are allowed, and the risk of fines or delays increases. This creates additional costs and red tape. Fortunately, RouteLogic helps automate this process so you don't have to worry about this.

What are the main rules of the zero-emission zone?

The zero-emission zone covers the city center within the S100 (the Grachtengordel). As in thirteen other Dutch cities, only zero-emission vehicles are allowed to drive here, with some exceptions:

  • Euro 5 buses may still drive inside until Jan. 1, 2027.
  • Euro 6 buses, registered before Jan. 1, 2025, have access until Jan. 1, 2028 (possibly extended to 2029).
  • Day exemptions are possible for vehicles with at least a Euro 4 engine (maximum 12 times per year, €30 per day).

In addition to this new zero-emission zone, Amsterdam also has an environmental zone that has different rules and covers a larger area. It is possible that these zones will be equalized after 2028.

Rules, exceptions and time-consuming hassles = chaos in route planning

For planners and logistics managers, mapping out routes that comply with the ever-changing rules in different cities is becoming increasingly challenging. Imagine you have a route that passes through Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht. Each of these cities has its own zero-emission zone, with different rules, exceptions and penalties. You have to consider the availability of electric vehicles in your fleet, check permits and apply for day waivers where necessary. One mistake and your driver will be fined or delayed. This, in turn, costs time, money and, above all, a lot of headaches.

RouteLogic: Your automatic solution for zero-emission planning

Where many business owners now puzzle with exemptions, emissions regulations and vehicle restrictions, RouteLogic does it all automatically for you.

  • Smart route planning: thanks to its unique algorithm, RouteLogic takes zero-emission zones into account and automatically schedules electric vehicles on routes where they are needed and when available.
  • No fines or hassles: Because the software is always up to date with regulations, you avoid unexpected costs and delays.
  • Always up-to-date: Municipal regulations change, but RouteLogic adapts accordingly without you having to find out or do anything yourself.

By using RouteLogic, you don't have to check whether your route falls within the zero-emission zone or which vehicles are or are not allowed. Everything happens automatically, so you can focus on more important things, like your business.
